Dining plans are worth it for big eaters and quick-service families who'll use every credit. They're often not worth it for families who graze, skip meals during busy park days, or prefer smaller portions. This is genuinely a math problem specific to how your family eats, not a universal yes or no.
The advantage most families never use: rebooking for discounts
Disney's promotions and discounts change throughout the year, and if a better offer comes out after you've already booked, it can often be applied to your existing reservation rather than requiring you to cancel and rebook. The catch is that someone has to actually notice the new discount and apply it — most families booking directly never do, simply because they're not checking.
